Responsible for the supervision, scheduling and evaluation of the HIM Coders, as well as performing the same functions as a Coder when needed.

Job Responsibilities
Determines, coordinates, and supervises daily staffing assignments and levels.
Provides leadership, orientation, training, and mentoring staff. Assists with performance evaluations and corrective actions.
Responsible for timely review of patient records in order to identify an appropriate selection of codes, which will accurately reflect the reason for admission, extent of care received, and level of severity of illness.
Responsible for insuring that all data elements required for federal and state reporting are collected and included in the patient’s abstract record. Responsible for seeking clarification from healthcare providers when necessary.
Oversees training and education for all coders, as well as performs at least monthly audits for quality. Reports findings to staff and provides any needed education.
Coordinates written responses to claims denials with the documentation specialist.
Ensures completion of annual competency assessment and skills validation for all employees. Ensures appropriate orientation of new employees including documentation of skills validation.
Enhances coding knowledge and skills with continuing education activities and by reviewing pertinent literature.

American Health Information ManagementAssociation (AHIMA) membership preferred.
Work Experience
3 years progressive experience in a related field and/or a leadership role required.
