Summary:
Bear Creek Aquatic Camp
Bear Creek Aquatic Camp, Owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, is a traditional resident girl’s summer camp situated on 183 acres of lakefront property, located on scenic Kentucky Lake in Benton, KY. Since 1980, Bear Creek Aquatic Camp has offered a unique life experience for girls to try new things, explore nature, gain independence, spend their day being physically active, develop life- long skills, experience success, and be themselves, and make friendships that last a lifetime.
At BCAC, counselors lead program activities as well as live in and supervise campers in their assigned units. During activity periods, counselors are responsible for their activity areas and for the group of campers assigned for that block of time. Most other times, they are with their unit.

Key Accountabilities

Unit Counselor
The Unit Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. They are responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. Group leadership, youth development experience and program development skills needed. Promote high standards in all aspects of the camp program. Serve as a role model to campers and staff by your actions, appearance, manners, language, and general conduct. Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their living unit, within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
2. Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
3. Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
4. Supervise campers in the dining hall as to manners, kapers, eating habits, appropriate behavior, etc.
5. Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
6. Ensure that unit curriculum is delivered through planning and implementation of program.
7. Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
8. Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
9. Assist in program areas such as lifeguarding, boating, archery, nature, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed.
10. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
11. Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
12. Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems, and discuss with camp health supervisor and/or resident camp director when appropriate.
13. Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to camp director.
14. Report accidents and incidents promptly.
15. Supervise unit housekeeping and sanitation. See that supplies are available and that equipment is used properly.
16. Maintain a well-stocked first-aid kit in your unit.
17. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
18. Set a good example to campers and others; follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
19. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities
20. Performs other duties as assigned.

General Accountabilities

3. Effectively manages financial and physical resources to achieve the mission of Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana.
4. Exhibits effective communication skills and provides exemplary customer service to both internal and external customers.
5. Reports incidents of abuse or potential abuse involving girls to the appropriate authorities and Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana.

Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

7. Ability to communicate and work with a variety of age groups and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.

Working conditions/environment:
1. Non-traditional work hours expected, Working long hours in an active camp program
2. Ability to walk/hike several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
3. Ability to carry and load luggage, tables, chairs, and other program equipment
4. Willing to live in camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available.
5. Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Education:
High School Diploma

Experience:
Demonstrated knowledge of, or willingness to learn, Girl Scout program, principles and standards.

Specific Skills and

requirements:
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Current certifications in American Red Cross lifeguarding, first aid, CPR & AED
Demonstrated experience interacting with customer/members and potential customers/members and the public, providing prompt and courteous customer service to all customers in person.
Identify and respond to environmental and other hazards
Respond appropriately to situations requiring First Aid, and assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
Possess physical strength and mental endurance required to maintain constant supervision of camper.
18+ years of age
Meets state, federal, and ACA requirements for summer camp employment. Must pass a background check and provide other forms and details.
Other certifications a plus (Archery, Challenge Course, Wilderness First Aid)
