GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The intent of this description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees on this job. Under the moderate supervision of the Human Resources Manager, responsible for hazard recognition and safety auditing administration specific to the power and water plants and grounds to safeguard the health and safety of the employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures organization’s adherence to all OMU Health and Safety policies, regulations and programs.
  • Conducts work site safety audits to determine hazards and potential hazards and to assure compliance with safety standards and government regulations, including recommending corrective and preventable measures when needed.
  • Track and monitor audit findings to ensure they are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Conduct safety incident investigations (accident or near miss) to determine root cause problems and prevention methods.
  • Respond to reports of unsafe conditions and recommend corrective or preventative measures where applicable.
  • Coordinates contractor safety program.
  • Responsible for work site air monitoring, employees use, applicable software, etc.
  • Work closely with the Safety & Health Compliance Coordinator to audit current work site safety processes/programs including safety controls (engineering, administrative, and work practices) and maintenance of industrial hygiene requirements.
  • Oversee or participate on department safety teams.
  • Monitor federal, state, and local legislature for any changes that may affect OMU.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Broad knowledge of such fields as accounting, marketing, business administration, finance, etc. Equivalent to a four-year college degree, plus 5 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and understand common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents; Ability to respond to complex or difficult inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.

Knowledge and Abilities

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with an emphasis in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Human Resources, Business or Industrial Safety or equivalent combination of education and experience. Considerable knowledge of federal and state regulations related to occupational safety and industrial safety training preferred. Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety methods, programs, policies and procedures preferred. Ability to work with personal computer, websites, and a variety of software programs. Skill in developing and promoting safety awareness. Demonstrated ability to create and delivery training presentations. Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize requirements, and be detailed-oriented. Ability to show initiative and use sound judgment. Must be able to independently schedule the workday and work alone. Must exercise a high degree of confidentiality and integrity. Experience: Three to five years of direct safety experience considered. Five plus years of direct safety experience preferred.
